Bench footing is becoming increasingly more popular in GTA homes, as people want to get more from their homes. Real estate has never been more expensive, and it makes sense to invest your money in the property you already have.
What is Bench Footing?
Simply put, you dig your basement floor lower, giving you more headroom and space. Next, you will pour a new foundation inside the existing one to add strength and structure, and give you a ledge equivalent to the added height of the basement. This is very popular in older homes and homes that may have more of a crawl space than a basement, with only about 4 or feet of head space.
Generally speaking, for every foot you want to add to the height of the room, you will need to add a foot to your bench-footing.

Bench-Footing or Underpinning: Which Do I Need?
Both underpinning and bench footing can effectively and safely expand your basement’s height. So which is the way to go for your basement? That depends. Bench-footing is faster and less expensive. But underpinning is stronger, and gives you more square footage.
