Why Toronto Homes Need Backwater Valves

Toronto’s sewer infrastructure can quickly become overwhelmed during storms. When this happens, wastewater can reverse flow into private properties, especially basements. Installing a backwater valve acts like a one-way gate—wastewater exits your property, but can’t return.
Without this protection, your basement is exposed to:
  • Raw sewage flooding

  • Property and foundation damage

  • Mold and health hazards

  • Uninsurable losses

Municipal code now recommends or requires backwater valves for many Toronto homes, especially those undergoing major renovations or with known backup history.

What Is a Backwater Valve?

A backwater valve is a mechanical device installed in your home’s main sewer line. Under normal conditions, it stays open to let wastewater flow to the city sewer. But when the city system backs up, the valve flap closes—stopping sewage from entering your home.

We install both flapper-style and ball-style backwater valves depending on your plumbing layout and the accessibility of your sewer line.

Signs You May Need a Backwater Valve

  • You’ve experienced sewer backups during rainstorms

  • Your basement is below street level

  • Your neighborhood is prone to flooding

  • You’re planning a basement renovation

  • Your insurer recommends flood prevention measures

  • You want to qualify for Toronto’s flood subsidy program

Even if your home hasn’t flooded yet, installing a valve now can help you avoid thousands in repairs later.

Benefits of Installing a Backwater Valve in Toronto

1. Prevents Basement Sewage Flooding
Heavy rains can overwhelm Toronto’s combined sewer systems. A backwater valve helps stop raw sewage from reversing course and flooding your basement.

2. Lower Insurance Premiums
Some insurance providers offer discounts for flood mitigation devices. A documented backwater valve installation may reduce your premiums and make you eligible for broader coverage.

3. Saves Thousands in Repairs
Cleaning up a sewage backup can cost $10,000–$50,000 or more, especially if you have a finished basement. A backwater valve is a one-time investment that protects against catastrophic loss.

4. Access to City Rebates
Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program offers up to $3,400 in financial aid for installing flood prevention devices. We help you through the paperwork to make your installation more affordable.

FAQs About Backwater Valves

Do I need a permit for installation?
Yes. Permits are required in Toronto. We handle the application process for you.
How long does installation take?
Most backwater valves are installed in one day, including cleanup.
Can I get the city rebate after installation?
Only if you’ve obtained permits and passed the final inspection. MT Drains ensures all steps are completed correctly.
How often should the valve be maintained?
We recommend annual inspections. If the valve clogs or sticks, it may not close during a backup.
Will I need to excavate part of my basement?
Yes. A small section of the floor must be opened to access the sewer line. We restore the concrete to a clean finish afterward.

Great experience with MT Drains & Plumbing in Barrie for our basement waterproofing project. Pavel was knowledgeable, straightforward, and easy to deal with, and the office team was responsive and organized throughout the process. I would like to sincerely thank MT Drain Plumbing for the excellent work they did. The entire team was professional, punctual, courteous, and very respectful throughout the process. Everything was well organized and completed on time. I especially appreciated how carefully they protected the surrounding areas and contained everything to prevent dirt, debris, or other materials from getting where they shouldn’t. The work was completed quickly, efficiently, and to a very high standard. I was also pleasantly surprised by the price — it was significantly lower than the quotes I received from other companies, which made the experience even better. I would also like to mention that the team members who came out to assess and discuss the work with me were extremely polite, professional, and punctual. I highly recommend MT Drain Plumbing to anyone dealing with waterproofing issues, drainage problems, or water management around their home. Update on August 24 2026: We needed to replace a shower cartridge and it turned out that we also needed to replace our main house water supply shut off valve before the shower job could be done. Olga in the office was very helpful in scheduling the job as well as in dealing with our municipality who needed to be involved as well. When Denis the technician arrived to do the job - early, which I always appreciate! - he assessed the job & dealt with the municipality further to expedite the job. It also turned out that the shower cartridge was badly corroded & required Denis' expert work & his experience to remove it without damaging the fixture. (This is a job the internet says you can do yourself, but when the cartridge is very old & corroded as this was, a professional is required!) He then easily installed the new cartridge. As usual, I was impressed by the professionalism and pleasantness of MT Drains' staff, both in the office & in the field. Update on Dec 17 2024: A toilet in our house came away from the floor in a way that broke the flange it was bolted to. I called MT Drains because they had done a fine repair job in our kitchen a few months earlier (see below). Viktoriya in the office was very friendly & helpful in getting us a cost estimate in a timely fashion and setting up an appointment to fix the problem that fit our schedules. We received email confirmation and reminder of the appointment, and a text confirmation on the morning of the appointment itself. The technician, Amir, arrived a few minutes before the start of the window for the appointment, which I always appreciate a lot! He was friendly, polite and professional. He assessed the repair requirements, confirmed the estimate, and completed the job in a timely manner. Amir also cleaned up everything and even took the garbage away with him. Viktoriya followed up shortly thereafter by phone to check that we were pleased with the job, and then sent the invoice to me for the agreed amount. She also confirmed that they received our payment right away. I’ve used MT Drains’ services for plumbing issues before and will happily use them again! The drain from our kitchen sink was leaking near the place where it attached to the sink itself. The reason turned out to be corrosion that was rotting away the place where the drain pipes attach to the sink. Pavel from MT Drains responded to my Trusted Pros posting within minutes, and was able to have a plumber come that very day. Dima arrived within the agreed time frame. He was polite, friendly, efficient and very skilled at diagnosing the problem and making the repair by replacing the corroded parts. He also cleaned up after his work. Viktoriya in the office was also very helpful and professional - the entire operation was fast, efficient, effective, friendly and professional. I will definitely call on MT Drains for any future plumbing needs.
Perfect service!
I recently had MT Drains & Plumbing Ltd replace the trench drain grate in my driveway, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Pavel and his team were professional, punctual, and highly skilled. The original grate was rusted and had become a safety hazard, but MT Drains provided a seamless replacement that looks fantastic and is incredibly durable. They handled the removal of the old grate and the installation of the new one with great care, ensuring that everything was level and properly secured. It is clear they take pride in their workmanship, as the site was left spotless upon completion. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of reliable plumbing or drain services.
Excellent service
Quality service by an extremely professional team. Would highly recommend.
We were referred to MT Drains & Plumbing by our plumber as the work that needed to be done to clear our catch basin needed special equipment. They were a pleasure to deal with because: 1. Their quote was clear and comprehensive 2. The response and turnaround time from query to quote was fast 3. Olga made it easy to book an appointment 4. The team dispatched to do the job were professional, did the work and did it in less time than quoted. Overall, a professional outfit that I would recommend.
